Winnipeg residents are facing another year of rising costs.
The City’s Preliminary 2026 Budget Update reveals a government that is spending more, taking on long-term commitments, and asking residents to shoulder the consequences.
The draft 2026 capital budget jumps from $677 million in 2025 to $1.19 billion - a 76% increase in just one year. This includes major road rehabilitation projects, facility upgrades, water and sewer expansions, and a growing list of long-term infrastructure commitments.
On the operating side, departments are requesting additional staff, higher wages, and expanded programs, further increasing the pressure on taxpayers.
Council will vote on the full budget on December 17th.
